Before I continue, I want to make it clear that her blog is not on DeafRead's blog list; she's boycotting DeafRead over the disagreement with the owner of DeafRead. So you'd have to find her blog outside of DeafRead. Nevertheless, I want to put a spotlight on her blog.
Yes, her blog was and is still a puzzle for me sometimes. When Patti first showed up, ending her comments with "peace"... I wrongly thought she was avoiding any confrontation so she used the placating word to install some sort of calm in us. Over time, I realized that to her, peace meant love, nothing more. She has a unique writing style, using small case letters and at the same time she never violates the rules of English grammar... it's interesting.
I enjoyed her blog posting about the degrees of the acceptance of the Deaf community. I learned that she was hard of hearing, growing up in a normal hearing family, etc... just like one of the majority (majority = deaf children of hearing families, as opposed to the minority = deaf children of deaf families.) Anyway, check our this particular posting:
http://handeyes.wordpress.com/2008/01/05/finding-my-home-where-do-i-fit/Also, she explored the meaning of Deaf Culture, what makes it a culture, etc. :
http://handeyes.wordpress.com/2008/01/02/what-the-heck-is-deaf-culture/She has written some postings about social activism, using her favorite role models who are Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr. as the examples of how to fight what she perceives as social injustices. She'd engage the dialogues with people who might not see eye to eye with her; she'd explain her side thoroughly, using many examples.) She'd ask questions and she'd acknowledge she has flaws and that she does stumble, just like us folks.
Oh, she and I do not always see eye to eye, but we respect each other and listen to each other. I had seen her around in Rochester (she was newly hired at NTID when I graduated from there, 2 decades ago or thereabouts.) Last month, a few bloggers and a few vloggers agreed to meet for lunch and that was the first time I met her in person ;-) She is a gutsy, giggling, cheerful RED-haired lady. And she does hug! Heh.
Patti... you are a human being and you have an ability to apologize and to forgive, which makes you unique. You can have conversations with some people who are not well-liked in the Deaf cyberspace and making some of us feel we are accepted.
Peace.
She is an interesting person. How you define "interesting" is pretty much up to each of us. Each to his or her own when it comes to blogging (or vlogging) including her staccato style of writing when it comes to making comments in other people's blogs. Thought processes are certainly different I can tell you that. She might be critical of my blogs or other bloggers but I have to remember that my experiences are my own and different from others which is why perspectives can get so skewed when differing backgrounds collide. Which is why I don't bother in making personal attacks or get overly critical about other bloggers or people in my blog. But sometimes being passionate about certain things in life can either hamper or hurt you and can create that disconnect. I try and keep that in mind the disconnect that exist with the online internet community which is completely different from meeting people in person. Reading other people blogs you can only give you a glimpse of their whole story, their personality and life experiences. No matter how much one tries to "intellectualize" about a person in making a judgement through blogs or comments, meeting people in the flesh is a different boat here.

karen
girl u r going out on the limb here with this one. smile.
u make me sound real presentable and all that. Thank u
i confess i blushed in places cuz its awkward to read what others got to say about u but its awfully nice to see and this grey day. i love the rains so rochy is the rochy is the perfect place to be and im glad ur here in the blogsphere being super brave and true and also in town.
very much enjoying ur positive blogging (and i ain't just saying that cuz u wrote about me)
McConnell - if i may...
1st of all i had to look up what a staccato style of writing means - i thought it was only a musical term - and what i found was "concise" and "hemmingway" so i started thinking that is a compliment - what mike is paying me a compliment or well maybe its a falsehood cuz i ain't usually concise but then i read some more and it said "twitter' style but i dont tweet ut i assume it must mean SHORT cuz the general defintion of the staccato re: music is aburpt and disconnected detached unconnected note
so i gotta ask - what does a staccato style of writing mean?
once my brother told me reading my emails is like an exercise in cracking a code - its so cryptic
perhaps that is what u meant - no idea but i like to know what kinda style me got so pretty please explain - use small words. thanks
re: karen's note about me lack of capitals and punctuations - yeah yeas ago i got bashed a bit by someone on line (vax Notes - remember those days Tayler?) and someone came to my defense saying i was like ee cummings. Which is truly sweet - seeing how almost daily i recite his "I thank you God for this most amazing day" poem in me mind
make to mike - re: all the rest u wrote - yep meeting folks in person is a different story - usually a good thing but not always. So when u coming to rochester? ; )
im gonna just gloss over some of the other comments u made about ur blogging cuz we in karen's space and im in a happy place. i kinda came to the conclusion that u and i ain't got much in common re: our ways of seeing the world as u pride urself on being a conservative pundit and ... i ain't one. but maybe some day we will have stuff to chat about.
again karen big thanks and keep on shining that light
peace

Well...Patti knows I'm not too crazy about her long, long winded comments that are cryptic at times. ;) So, I do agree with her brother about her writing style. It takes patience to read her writing.
Patti's blog are worth reading at times. She definitely is someone who is passionate about certain deaf issues and that can be reflected on her blog.
While we both may not agree on many things, I think we found that we can put that aside and be reminded of the similarities that we have. At least she does make an effort to reach out, which is not something many are able to to.

Patti's style of writing reminds me of a thoughtful stream of ideas that soon circles to a conclusion--a gentle whap on the head. But definitely a hit, don't be deceived by the mildness of her words. Many attitudes and statements in cyberspace ain't cool, to use her expression, and often I find myself admiring her way with words where I might have been more blunt.
I hope you never stop v/blogging, Patti. We need your presence guiding us all back to sanity at times.

I have always found Patti's blog posts and comments super insightful and well written. I was astonished and saddened when she left DeafRead over an ugly rift that shouldn't have happened. I'm glad you got a chance to meet her. It seems your move was a good thing.

Seriously, Patti... you're so full of surprise and truly a goddess when you think about it. You tried, and I commend you for that. This goes for Karen, too. I'm kinda late comer to the b/vlogsphere tho I stayed away for a very good reason. That'll be for another time, if ever.
Just wanna give a shout out to two of the goddesses.

Why don't you set up your own blog? I know you already have an account with youTube and ASLrocks... you don't have to register your blog with DeafRead; it can stand alone.

Ahh, I haven't got around to update my own wordpress. :) Will whenever I get to it. :D

GM, Karen!!!
Thanks for posting about Patti Durr! But I'm not sure about Gandhi for right now...
1. Shocking stuff about Gandhi's dark side -
http://pakistanledger.com/2009/07/19/mohandas-gandhis-dirty-sex-life/
2. Here is the evidence of Gandhi regularly had sex with his own niece. He was also a hyprocrite for being a solider for England while lived in South Africa. Gandhi also urged Britian to cede to Hitler and allowd the mass suicide among the Jewish people and drank his own urination to see it as some kind of Holy stuff - http://rupeenews.com/2007/12/25/six-stories-of-mohandas-gandhi-his-failures-sexual-perversion/
I guess that we have to be more careful what we read or see something.
The sources came from Gandhi's grandsons, etc. The rumors about Gandhi had been very old f...or many years.
Nobody is perfect anyway.
Do you remmy the classic leadership style from three persons like
Leader A - vegeterian, animal lover, neatly dressed and fiery speaker
Leader B - chain-smoking, gossip lover,
Leader C - drunkard, hot temper, obsese, had children grew up to be alcoholics
Which leader we prefer to have as ours?
Many people answered - Leader A. People do not realize that the leader A is Adolf Hitler.
Leader B is Franklin Roosevelt
Leader C - Winston Churchill
Nobody is perfect, again! :)
Here is the classical leadership style used by Gandhi -

Thank you Karen for posting your blog!

heye kim -
if u r the kim from many moons ago who did the sneetches blog - wow i really remember u. u left a mark. thank u. i miss reading ur stuff
regardless of who u be - i do thank u for the comment
re: " I was astonished and saddened when she left DeafRead over an ugly rift that shouldn't have happened."
Yes very very true - that rift which has recently been proven to be have been caused by an unjust vicious vendetta should have never happened - indeed.
finlake - wordpress - yes go for it. set up a b/vlog site to stock plie ur good stories and activism. i like safe places to land.
popemistress - dont believe everything u read. PLENTY of falsehoods in those links. Was gandhi a perfect man NOPE. no humans are.
i admire his commitment to soul force and truth force. His employment of civil disobedience. His pursuing of positive peace and not negative peace.
I have read of his stand re: WW II - i do not know if civil disobedience can work in the face of that level of govern mentally controlled and sponsored hatred and systematic oppression (from laws to gas chambers) - i am doubtful. I believe at the time of Gandhi's quoting tht folks should be using civil disobedience to combat Nazism and antisemitism we were not aware of the camps and death machines but regardless. I do not know if his ideals would work. I suspect not. I know in pockets - BRAVE souls did try to resist peacefully - the White Rose, Rauol Wallenberg, even the women who smuggled explosives to the sonderkommandos to blow up some of the ovens to slow down the killing apparatus.
re: his neices - i do not know how much is fact and how much is fiction. Rumors (even amongst family members) are some times spread to hurt and distort. Hoover of the FBI fabricated alot of false evidence to discredit MLK because he was an extremist of love.
at the same time it is true that no human is perfect.
we look at where they stood during times of moral crisis
thanks for sharing
much peace
